The Ludvik Marianych Ukrainian Music & Leadership Scholarship supports current post-secondary students and recent graduates who demonstrate commitment to Ukrainian heritage through exceptional musical performance and community involvement. To honour Ludvik Marianych for all his work over the years in Ukrainian culture, it is with great pleasure and an honour that the FoUVS announces the “Ludvik Marianych Ukrainian Music & Leadership Scholarship” to be awarded for the first time in 2021 at the Ukrainian Music Fest.

Ludvik Marianych served on many boards and organizations over his lifetime. Most notably, he was a member of the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society (FoUVS) board where he served for several years. As a volunteer, Ludvik spent much of his latter time in his role as a teacher, musician, conductor, and genealogist at various special events at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village and other organizations including St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cultural Centre in Edmonton.

One of Marianych’s great passions was his Ukrainian language and culture which he was able to keep alive with his performing group, Chaika (Seagull) – a group of students who would perform under Ludvik’s baton, anywhere from 5-20 of them played a variety of instruments. “Ludvik cared a great deal about fostering an inclusive environment for players of a variety of different skill levels and wasn’t too bothered with the composition of the orchestra. I don’t think I had as much fun playing anywhere as I did with Ludvik,” said Michael Armstrong a language student at St. Andrew’s and a Chaika member. The group performed at many events showcasing Ukrainian culture such as Heritage Days, the Pysanka Festival in Vegreville, UFest, Shevchenko concerts and koliady concerts, to name a few.  If it was Ukrainian and Ludvik could shine with his students, he was there, including 59 performances between 2001-2019 with his beloved Chaika. “Ludvik was a real renaissance man and also had interest in iconography and genealogical research that helped many Canadians of Ukrainian descent trace their roots,” added Michael Armstrong.

Soar with the seagulls, Renaissance Man!  Eternal be your memory!  Vichnaia pamiat!
